Frequently Asked Questions
How is take-home pay calculated?+
Take-home pay is your gross salary minus all mandatory deductions including income tax, social security contributions, and other payroll taxes. The exact deductions depend on your country, filing status, and income level. For example, in the US your deductions include federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare; in the UK they include income tax and National Insurance.
What taxes are deducted from my salary in the US?+
In the United States, your salary is subject to federal income tax (progressive rates from 10% to 37%), Social Security tax (6.2% on income up to the annual wage cap), and Medicare tax (1.45% on all income). Many states also charge an additional state income tax. This calculator covers federal taxes and FICA only.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?+
Your marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income — the highest bracket you fall into. Your effective tax rate is the overall percentage of your total income that goes to taxes. Because income is taxed progressively (lower rates on the first dollars earned), your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate.
How do taxes differ between the US, UK, and Israel?+
Each country has a unique tax structure. The US uses a federal bracket system plus FICA payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare). The UK combines income tax with National Insurance contributions. Israel applies seven income tax brackets plus National Insurance (Bituach Leumi) and health insurance contributions.
Is this salary calculator accurate?+
This calculator provides estimates based on current standard tax brackets and mandatory deductions for each country. It does not account for state or local taxes, pre-tax benefits (such as 401k or pension contributions), tax credits beyond basic personal allowances, or other individual circumstances.
